The 2024 Rotary Club of Lake Stevens Scholarship Application is now available! The process is done completely online. Click this link to get started. Students can choose to apply for the college and university scholarship or the vocational, technical or trade school scholarship. Students, please read the instructions carefully. Make sure you fully understand the questions and demonstrate in your answers that you have done your research. The deadline is Friday, April 12, 2024. Applicants are then selected for interviews and scholarships are awarded at one of our Club Meetings in later May. Our very special guest and weekly program speaker on Friday, March 22nd was Kathleen Olson, Assistant District Governor Area J and District Governor Nominee Designate and will serve as District Governor in 2026-27 who talked about "Animal Welfare In Action." Working with The Humane Society of the United States and The HSUS Animal Rescue team to help save animals who are victims of animal cruelty or neglect and from natural disasters. They assist in the ongoing care of rescued dogs and cats while providing safe animal handling, feeding, enrichment preparation, kennel cleaning to administrative tasks, all utilizing animal rescue volunteers.
Kendra Pinkleman, Chair of our Club's Program Committee spoke to us on Friday, March 15th about "Food for Thought", using food to support mental health. According to Hippocrates, "Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine be thy Food." Kendra stated that diet is as important to psychiatry as it is to cardiology, endocrinology, and gastroenterology. She listed neurotransmitters in her discussion starting with Excitatory to Inhibitory to Modulating with a list in each category. Next she talked about anxiety, depression and ADHD and listed all of the most common causes.

We need as many of you as possible to attend and participate in voting but better than voter turn out in most of our elections.
Our special guest speaker on Friday, March 9th was Mayor Brett Gailey. He gave us a quick overview of some activities going on right now in the city. The Mayor will return on April 12th for a State of the City address. In the meantime, the City is undergoing a American Public Works Association accreditation with the staff and city leaders participating and engaged in the process. This has been in the works for over the past 2 1/2 years. The Main Street project will cost around $4 million dollars and start in August. The city will be hosting a Easter Egg hunt at North Cove Park. The City has applied for a couple of grants, one a bridge project and a another for a new weir at the City beach. More to come during his April 12th presentation.
Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL) is open to participants ages 15-17 and is held annually at Alexandra, a neighborhood house in Surrey BC Canada. On Friday, March 1st, Past President Chris Vallo drove our two sponsored candidates, Diego and Pablo to Surrey, BC. Diego and Pablo spent the weekend to become well-rounded individuals with increased perspective and enthusiasm for growth, who can make informed decisions through their leadership journey. Just a few years ago, three of our sponsored candidates came home and started the Interact Club at Lake Stevens High School which has flourished ever since with 30-60 members attending meetings each Wednesday during the school year.
Our guest speaker on Friday, March 1st was Barbara Gordon one of the founders of Helping Our Miniature Equines (H.O.M.E.) with a focus on rescuing and serving the miniature equine community. The first home rescue arrived on a cold, rainy, early morning of January 28, 2021. Many of these miniature equines are unwanted, neglected, abused and no longer cared for.
Interact is a service club for youth ages 14-18. The name is a combination of the words international and action. We join Clubs in over 120 countries around the world. The global youth network is dedicated to community and international service. Every Interact Club project, great or small, has a lasting impact on society worldwide.
